Enabling Livelihoods: Boosting Women-led Rural Enterprises
Contact Base, in collaboration with IIM Calcutta Innovation Park (IIM-CIP) as part of their CSR initiative, awarded grants to two remarkable organizations under the “Enabling Livelihoods: Boosting Women-led Rural Enterprises” program. Launched in August 2024, this program aims to recognize and support grassroots organizations that are making significant strides in empowering rural women entrepreneurs across West Bengal.
The program began with an open call, attracting over 50 applications from social enterprises, CSOs, and SHGs across the state. In September, shortlisted applicants participated in a series of workshops, interactions, and pitch sessions led by experts in grassroots development. From this competitive pool, Hill Social Welfare Society from Kalimpong and North 24 Parganas Samyo Shromojibi Sanstha from Bashirhat emerged as the winners for their impactful work in empowering rural women.
Each winning organization received a grant of Rs. 2.25 lakh at an award ceremony on November 7, 2024, held at IIM Calcutta Innovation Park. This seed funding will enable them to scale up their initiatives, fostering sustainable livelihoods and financial independence for rural women in their communities.
About the Winners:
- Hill Social Welfare Society (Kalimpong): With over 23 years of experience, this organization focuses on building skills in horticulture, floriculture, handloom weaving, greenhouse farming, and organic farming. By offering training and connecting women directly with markets, they have helped numerous women generate stable incomes and achieve financial independence.
- North 24 Parganas Samyo Shromojibi Sanstha (Bashirhat): This women’s collective empowers rural women near the India-Bangladesh border through skill development in areas such as sewing, handicrafts, and livelihood training. They also connect women entrepreneurs with financial schemes and low-interest loans, supporting small businesses in fashion, farming, and handmade jewelry.
Contact Base and IIM-CIP will continue to provide these organizations with mentorship, capacity building, and networking opportunities to further strengthen their impact. This program underscores the organizers’ commitment to uplifting rural women by supporting skill-building, market access, and entrepreneurship, contributing to a more resilient and financially independent community.
