AWE 5.0: Design and Innovation Workshop for Women in Jharkhand

As part of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) 5.0 Program, supported by the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata, a seven-day Product Innovation and Design Development Workshop was held in Seraikela Kharsawan district. Conducted by Mr. Gautam Modak, a renowned Product Design Expert, the workshop brought together 15 women artisans from the Sabar indigenous community of Makula village, skilled in crafting khasi grass and date palm leaf products.
The workshop aimed to enhance traditional craftsmanship by integrating modern design elements while preserving the community’s cultural heritage. Through hands-on training, participants explored innovative techniques to elevate the quality and market appeal of their products.

The use of azo-free dyes and eco-friendly methods ensured vibrant, long-lasting colors, aligning with growing consumer demand for sustainable products. - Innovative Design Concepts:
Participants experimented with color cotton threads to create fresh patterns and textures, expanding their product range. - Product Diversification:
While traditional forms like baskets and trays remained central, the artisans explored creating new, complex shapes to diversify their offerings for broader markets.
The workshop empowered the women with design innovation knowledge, enhancing their entrepreneurial potential and positioning their crafts for wider market reach. Participants expressed enthusiasm for further mentorship and business support to grow their enterprises.
